Harvey Brown had lost all hope. After serving two tours in the Persian Gulf War, the former truck driver came back to the states tired, disconnected and looking for work. A medical condition that he developed in the Gulf prevented him from doing his job and he spiraled into a deep depression. Sitting on a hotel bed, with a gun to his temple, Harvey pulled the trigger.

More than 26 million military veterans have served to preserve Americas' freedoms and securities. Sadly, each year, over half a million of those veterans experience homelessness. Many of those veterans become depressed, turn to drugs and/or alcohol to cope, and some resort to taking their own life.

Thankfully, Harvey was not one of those veterans. In his state of depression, he forgot the bullets. Almost ending his life gave him a wake-up call; Harvey wasn't ready for his story to end. He turned to Goodwill's "Operation Independence", an empowerment program for veterans that provides training and support services. Harvey is now enrolled in Southern Wesleyan University, majoring in business and helps other needy veterans change their story.
